the blue ; jj maybank
pairing : female reader x jj maybank summary : stuck on island was bound to drive you insane but having him close to you wasn't so bad. warnings : none? words : 1.5k a/n: back in my writing era ig? this is so shot I want to cry
you have been stuck on this island for two weeks. you scratch another line onto the rock and sigh to myself. two weeks ago you were chasing teasure and now here you were stranded on a deserted island. it's funny how life can change so suddenly.
"yess wooo" screams kiara as jj secures the flag on the top on the palm tree. you smile up at him as he screams out a cry in celebration. this island was now christened poguelandia.
once he got down to the ground you made your way over to him. kie had taken charge during your time on the island and today she had decided that you and jj would go find food and supplies e.g coconuts and berries.
truthfully you would've much rathered stayed with sarah and weave palm trees.
"c'mon y/n" jj says gesturing to follow him as he takes a machete and swings it over his back.
you sigh and follow him but its hard to keep up as your feet sink into the sand as you walk. you hated the sand.
"bye kie". jj waves to her before walking off. you can't help but notice kie's smirk at jj's words.
you chase after jj. "so you and kie then?". jj laughs and when noticing your expression realized you were being serious.
"what no?!, me and kie? Are you being serious?".
you raise your hands in defeat. he didn't know that he would get this defensive. maybe there was nothing going on there. well what did you care.
holding out a hand for you to take jj pulled you over a rock sticking out in the ground. his hand in yours made you feel warm. it was a nice feeling but one you chose to ignore. you pulled your hand away fast.
the trek through the jungle was silent. you didn't mind the silence that much. it was a comfortable silence.
"wait up can we stop for a sec". you begin to slow down slightly out of breath. a near tree was your support as you tried to regain your steady breathing.
out of the corner of your eye you saw jj approach you. he didn't say a word but his eyes said more. you looked up at him to find that he was already looking back at you.
"what are you looking at?" you ask slightly annoyed.
"you" he admits.
you look up at him with a raised eyebrow.
"you look good today".
you chuckle to yourself.
"yeah my greasy hair and sweat covered clothes would to be blame".
jj puts his hands in his pockets and mives his attention to his shoes. "you still look good".
you pause. "thanks.....".
jj nods and smiles.
the waves crashing against the rocks and birds chirping in the distance were the sounds that met your ears.
jj spoke again. "do you ever think about going home?" he asks softly.
you have been a kook all your until you met kiara who introduced you to the pogues. you haven't looked back ever since.
you and jj are alike in many ways. one in having abusive parents. ever since you were little your father had taken advantage of you and your mother. it wasn't until you grew up that you realized how bad it was.
you thought about your mother constantly but you had no desire to go back to the obx.
"not a chance".
jj clears his through and looks at you solemnly. "what about your mum would you go back for her".
you swallow so you don't start bawling in front of him. "you know i would".
"she loves you so much y/n i hope you know that".
you try to smile back at the golden boy but a stray tear falls down your cheek. he always knew the right words to say.
jj kneels down to your height where you are sitting on a large rock.
"hey hey" he whispers taking your hand trying to calm you down. it took seconds for you to break down.
he soothinly rubbed his thumb across your palm. his touch grounded you. the tears were still falling but you felt at peace.
jj wipes a tear from your cheek. you smile at him when he does so. his finger lingers for a moment longer than it should and falters further down your face.
your heart begins to race. you pull his hand away. "thank you" you mutter.
his expression has changed. one of confusion.
"anytime".
:::
"y/n truth or dare?" cleo asks as the woven hat is placed on your heart.
you hesitate for a moment. "dare....?"
"oh girl that was a mistake" cleo says with a michevious grin which makes you regret your decision.
jj sits across from you in the circle. this isn't the first time he has looked over at you. all day you had been swimming around his mind. he couldn't stop thinking about you. he didn't want to. he just couldn't figure out why.
cleo whispers to sarah and then to kiara who are contemplating your dare. pope and john b are completely clueless but when you look over to jj he looks.....nervous?
"i dare you to make out with jj".
you gasp. at first you thought they were messing with you but jj's face told you that he was waiting a response.
okay maybe kissing jj wouldn't be so bad. but you didn't want to do it here not like this.
"um.....sorry jayj but i ain't making out with you....." you trail off your cheeks turning red. hopefully he didn't take that in the wrong way.
pope and john b enunciate how jj was feeling inside. "ooof y/n that was harsh".
even the girls seemed confused. you shrugged awkwardly not willing to give them an explanation.
instead you decided to leave the group anf head down to the sea. nobody stopped you.
the wind brushed your hair away from your face and you couldn't help but smile to yourself at the image of the moon reflecting onto the sea.
a perfect mirroring image.
::
"you bitch all you care about is yourself!" your father screams just as his hand collided with your mothers face.
you shuddered at the sound from your position at the top of the stairs. all you wanted to do was rip your mother out of the grasp of your father but something rooted you to the spot.
another slap came followed by a cry. the next thing you heard was silence. then footsteps....nearing the stairs. you jumped up in realization. there your father stood with his eyes sparkling with a grin on his face.
the next thing you knew he hand you held against the wall his hand raised. you closed your eyes and braced for impact.
you woke up, your chest heaving. you were sobbing uncontrollably. all the memories came flooding back that you had put in the past.
"y/n?" . you wiped a stray tear from your eye before sitting up. jj had heard the crying almost immediately. he is a light sleeper. when he noticed it was you he wanted nothing more than to wake your from the torments in your head. instead he held your hand and waited.
you look down to find his hand in yours. you can't help but feel warm inside.
"are you okay?" he asks.
"okay that was a stupid question" jj admits when he notices no change in your demeanour.
part of you wanted to laugh but you were still out of it. you could still feel his breath fanning across your face, the sound of the slap and the beat of your heart in your chest.
in not getting a response jj takes that as a nudge that he should depart. he slips his hand from yours and starts to get up but you pull him back.
"stay" you whisper.
that one word said so much. jj hesitates.
"please".
how could he say no to that?
you pat the ground next to you instructing him to lie down next to you. he does just that.
you lie there in silence for a moment.
you move closer to his chest and he doesn't object especially when you lay your head to rest beneath his chin. his heart was beating fast and it prided you to know that you did that.
"thank you".
"for what?" he asks.
"for being you".

I've been telling my boyfriend that he has to see Siargao first before we start traveling out of the country, and that Surigao del Norte is my favorite province (tbh I think my new fave province is now Siquijor lol). Looking back, I remember Siargao as the place of my "young and wild" Jasfher era — bar hopping every day, running on the streets in the wee hours of the night super drunk laughing with my barkada who were equally drunk, multiple island hopping, swimming with the stingless jellyfishes, and channeling my inner Sid Lucero (fyi I learned how to surf here in Siargao). It was such an adventurous time.
How time flew by so fast I just know my aching back won't be able to seep up anymore. But you know, aging cannot (and probably will never) stop the thirst for new places of adventures. This time around, I decided to go to Siargao again with Dave, and how delighted we were that his mom also decided to join. Time for some son-in-law and mother-in-law bonding!
I think it’s important to set expectations before coming to Siargao. It's not another Palawan, or Bohol, or Boracay or any other place in the world. Siargao’s vibe is unique, and its appeal doesn’t only lie in its natural beauty. While Siargao is beautiful, and features wonderful attractions such as the Maasin River and the Magpupungko Pools, there are so many other things to do here like the tri-island half-day island hopping tour (Daku, Guyam and Naked Islands) as these islands are easily accessible from General Luna.
Naked Island is a 200-meter-long strip of powdery white sand located off the southern shore of Siargao Island in Surigao Del Norte. The white sand island is completely bare, hence its name. Since there are no trees on the Island to provide shade, the Island is better suited for a quick visit during a Siargao island-hopping tour. Its bare beach also makes for a great spot to soak up some sun if you want to sunbathe. Meanwhile, the surrounding clear waters are perfect for swimming when you want to escape the sun's heat.
Guyam Island, on the other hand, is quite small. The island is uninhabited similar to the nearby Naked Island and currently does not have any accommodations or cottages. Visitors can only take shade under the palm trees dotting the area. This island is also small enough that visitors can travel around the island on foot within fifteen minutes. Hidden between the palm trees are stalls selling delicious burgers and fresh fruit juices. There are also a few swings and hammocks, perfect if you want to relax for a few minutes.
Daku Island boasts a wide and quiet shoreline, picture-perfect coconut and palm trees on white sand, and just a few villagers. On calm days, snorkeling is a must-do, more so with the clear electric-blue water. On bigger days, the Daku Reef creates a fun wave that is still more forgiving for surfers, as it’s not shallow like most breaks on Siargao.
Among the three islands, Daku is the largest by far, which is why it is particularly ideal for a lunch stop. There are cheap meals at beachside shacks and further inland, but the best way to enjoy lunch here is to bring fresh seafood from General Luna, rent a bungalow hut on the shore, and hire the local beachside cooks for a barbecue feast. Just look at how our dining table is filled with sumptuous seafoods and tropical fruits!

Talokanil Clothing, Part Two
thank you to everyone who engaged with this post!
seeing more bts footage plus reading interviews and doing my own research has had me reevaluating some of my earlier assumptions, so here's a part two!
i've been sitting on the idea that the talokan plant is like a coconut (aka the tree of life in the tropics) equivalent to the talokanil for a while, but i wasn't sure if there was enough canon or real historical equivalent evidence to support this.
this post suggests that early talokanil clothing was made of the talokan plant's fibers. initially i was unsure about this bc i thought it was some kind of succulent, but then i came across this post suggesting it's a type of agave & suddenly everything made sense!
this gets long, but hear me out: agave is endemic to the americas and its variants hold historical and cultural importance in central america (pre-hispanic up to present). it takes a long time to mature, the exact length varying from species to species (hence the moniker century plant), and flowers and seeds only once before dying (radding 2012, 84-115). parts of the agave are edible, but its two most prominent uses are for fibers and alcohol production. two agave cultigens, A. fourcroydes (henequen) and A. sisalana (sisal) are known fiber producers, and are both native to the yucatán (trejo-torres, gann, and christenhusz 2018, 366-379).
another variant, A. americana aka maguey (although it seems the term maguey is can be used to refer to other agave species), also produces fibers that can be used for woven and non-woven textiles and even paper (hulle, kadole, and katkar 2015, 64-75), and is a species of agave that can be used to produce the alcoholic drink mezcal. A. tequilana is the sole agave species used to produce tequila (which i believe can be technically called a type of mezcal). both mezcal & tequila are distilled from the fermented, roasted "hearts" of the agave. the method to distill mezcal (and later, tequila) was introduced during the colonial era, likely by indigenous filipinos who arrived via the manila-acapulco galleon trade (walton 1977, 113-132).
pulque is the pre-colonial equivalent of mezcal/tequila, made from the fermented agave sap (many species can be used). its consumption was highly regulated & associated with religious rituals (escalante et al. 2016). described as a white, slightly viscous liquid, pulque does somewhat call to mind the liquid the shaman made from the talokan plant, although the latter was, of course, blue. this is a side note, but a mural in cholula, puebla, mexico, depicts a gathering of people purportedly drinking pulque. the production team may have taken some inspiration from this as well for the flashback scenes.
the goddess mayahuel is associated with maguey & pulque, as well as femininity & fertility (guzmán 2016). (i'm a bit confused bc wiki says she's aztec, but escalante et al. & guzmán don't give a specific indication. her name though is nahuatl-derived.)
so anyway! we have a wonder plant with cultural and religious significance that can provide both food and clothing, and may even be used in construction (including in composites)! it makes so much sense that the talokan plant is a type of agave, albeit of course one with properties that no irl species has.
i've read several hannah beachler interviews but i haven't come across one where she talks about whether or not there was more of the talokan plant. the rest of this post hinges on the assumption that the talokanil are actively cultivating the plant, or something similar (which i'll be referring to as talokanil agave from now on), so if later canon lore proves me wrong — well, i'll cross that bridge when i get there lol.
for additional context, since i'm only here to speculate on the materials used in-universe, this twitter thread here provides a breakdown as to the accuracy of the clothing styles of the talokanil vis-à-vis pre-colonial maya.
now that's done, let's get to the actual speculation:
i'm inclined to retract my previous assertion that coconut coir was used in the warriors' uniforms; instead, what i took to be coconut coir is probably talokanil agave. (although they could probably still use coconut if they really wanted to!)
when i wrote the first post, i didn't realize how many outfit changes k'uk'ulkan goes through during the talokan scenes, but from what i can tell of the textures, they could all very well be made of talokanil agave or even just regular maguey. while cotton was more associated with elites over maguey in irl pre-colonial mesoamerica (tremain 2020, 1-11), i haven't seen anything yet that would indicate that nobility wouldn't wear maguey.
i'd thought namora's ceremonial dress would be heavy but we see it in action in mabel's ig post and it's actually very light! iris van herpen, the designer, has said in an ig post that the cape feathers are made of silver-lined silk organza. underwater, the effect is something like seagrass or kelp moving with the currents, which is very pretty. when i look up silk in mesoamerica, many of the sites are, strangely, associated with the church of the latter-day saints, but one textile-focused website at least indicates that widespread silk production began and flourished during the colonial era, so i think we can rule out actual silk as the in-universe material for the dress. maybe very high quality cotton or talokanil agave (especially for the silver lining. unless it's vibranium!).
we also see one of namora's surface outfits used underwater in a bts clip from mabel, one which i thought would be too heavy to wear in the water. i mean, i guess, technically, you can wear anything you want underwater, but comfort is a different matter. in my previous post, i'd said i'd thought this particular dress and the others she and the handmaidens wore were made out of some kind of barkcloth, but, surprise, again, it's probably talokanil agave or regular maguey (agave sisal is resistant to seawater).
the twitter thread i mentioned above has some insights into attuma's ceremonial outfit, including that he's wearing a jaguar pelt. the talokanil could very well have some kind of coming-of-age ceremony where they go to the surface for the first time to hunt. or attuma could just be an adrenaline junkie lol. hammerhead sharks, jaguars — it's all the same to him. as for the rest of the outfit, i'm gonna say different grades of talokanil agave bc why not!
at different points in the film, namora and shuri both wear body jewelry primarily made of jade. iris van herpen has said that shuri's also has pearls and Spondylus shell beads (the orangey-pink ones). namora's doesn't appear to contain Spondylus but perhaps other precious stones (maybe obsidian?). that might indicate some kind of difference in status, or some kind of oblique reference to namora being a warrior, since obsidian was often used for weapons (saunders 2001, 220-236).
shuri's second talokan outfit has feathers on the back, reminiscent of the tail plumes of the resplendent quetzal (yes, as in the bird associated with quetzalcoatl, the aztec equivalent of kukulcan. this man is never beating the egocentric allegations 💀). however, the color is wrong. resplendent quetzals have primarily green plumage & only the males sport the iconic tail feathers. moreover, resplendent quetzals live in the highland rainforests, not the coastal areas. so i'm not sure if this means that the feathers are from a different bird species altogether, or, like namora's headdress, they are not actually feathers but fish fins. i haven't found a high-res enough photo of the outfit so i still can't be sure.
the rest of the outfit appears to be a mix of fabrics, heavier on top and lighter on the bottom. i'm intrigued that the bottom half is pants, because we haven't seen any talokanil wear anything similar. could this be a leftover from the cut scenes where shuri & riri were supposed to work on something for k'uk'ulkan, & this is an outfit she came up with herself? they might have given her the fabric & told her to go to town, which could explain why the design looks very different from what we've seen of talokanil fashion. i think riri also gets a different outfit but i can't find good photos of it.
now her scenes were cut from the final version of the film, but one of the talokanil extras posted some intriguing bts footage. her character was supposed to a scientist (likely from the cut scenes with shuri & riri). she's not blue & isn't wearing face/gill masks, suggesting her parts take place underwater.
her outfit is pretty unconventional compared to namora's or the handmaidens'. she appears to be wearing more plant life (probably some sort of kelp & seagrass, among other species i don't recognize), but the main body of her outfit looks strangely artificial. i'm not sure if this is intentional or if her final appearance was meant to be tweaked with cgi (the mesh underneath is throwing me off). i would like to say her outfit is probably mostly made of talokanil vibranium, but i'm not sure if that would be realistic in-universe (would that mean she is of high status? another relative of k'uk'ulkan perhaps? or does jade still mean more to the talokanil than vibranium, therefore her use of it doesn't necessarily indicate status?). in any case, she's the only talokanil we're aware of who eschews traditional clothing styles.
additional bts footage from jewelianna ramos-ortiz (the scientist) also show other talokanil who are dressed differently from the regular warriors we see. they aren't blue either, but we do see that they have on red body paint (which we have not seen other talokanil use). google scholar is being reticent but as far as i can tell, body paint in pre-colonial mesoamerica, when not in a funerary context, was associated with ceremonies or festivals. the latter likely used organic compounds such as cochineal or achoite (that's achuete/atsuete for us filipinos), while the former employed the toxic cinnabar (source). with the talokanil, it could really go either way; we don't know if they're as immune to toxins as they are to stab wounds. i'm not sure about the seawater resistance of either type of pigment though.
interestingly, they appear to be wearing the leaves of surface plants (none of which i recognize, unfortunately, even after some googling of native yucatán flora). their different manner of dress may indicate the nature of their role in talokanil society, though as to what that role is remains to be seen.
one funny implication though of practically everyone in talokan wearing talokanil agave is that shuri could've just taken anyone's clothes to re-create the heart-shaped herb, including the ones she was given 💀 but the talokanil still could've cultivated the plant in the past centuries such that the variant they use for clothing differs quite a bit from the original so it wouldn't work as well. like maybe they have a "drink this to save your life. for emergencies only" cultigen & a "for everyday life" cultigen lol.
aaaaand that's it! if you're still reading this, thank you! this was a fun research exercise, although i probably still missed a lot. this was practically a whole damn research paper lmao. let me know your thoughts!

THE PALM TREE PHENOMENON!
THE PALM TREE PHENOMENON
Psalm 92:12-14
Palm trees exhibit an enormous diversity in physical characteristics and inhabit nearly every type of habitat. They are hardly affected by any weather conditions, making them one of the few trees that flourish and bloom in any place and season. A palm tree normally lives from seven to ten decades, producing a mind-blowing diversity of fruits (such as coconuts, dates, and palm wine) and has many uses.
Palm branches were used in John 12:12-15 to line the streets in celebration of Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem, symbolizing His victory over sin and death. This event, known as Palm Sunday, fulfils the prophecies of the Old Testament and ushers in a new era of salvation for humanity. The palm tree is therefore a symbol of victory and triumph.
The first mention of the palm tree is found in Exodus 15:27, in Elim, which is now called Wady-Ghurandel, the most extensive watercourse in the western desert. This oasis is adorned with a great variety of trees, among which is the palm tree. Weary travellers must have been delighted to encamp under its shade and enjoy its abundant supply of sweet water.
The palm is referred to as “the tree of the desert,” as it flourishes in the desert, and its presence is a sign of water. It’s amazing that the Bible likens us to a palm tree! The believer is meant to grow vigorously, with longevity, fragrance, and beauty. Like these palm trees, we are set for the life, character, and destiny of the flourishing righteous.
The faithful flourish like the palm tree, the long-lived and stately palm. The believer flourishes in the courts of God, abiding in God’s presence according to Psalm 23:6, as opposed to the temporary “flourishing” of the evildoers who are doomed to destruction.
Everything in life needs an additive to improve or preserve it. Just as plants need fertilizers to grow and flourish, so do believers need God to grow and flourish. Those planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of God.
As these trees flourish in their respective soils and climates, so shall the righteous in the ordinances of God. But only those who trust in and dwell in the Lord, according to Jeremiah 17:7-8, are planted by water, are called blessed, and filled with God-defined benefits. It is those whose trust is in the Lord. Palm trees in the Bible also represent beauty, prosperity, and fertility and a sign of prosperity and fertility, as well as been seen as a sign of God’s covenant with his people.
Only trust in God motivates confident obedience in times of crisis. When you see palm trees in heavy wind and storm, you’ll understand the strength and tenacity of the trees. Every other tree may be uprooted by the wind or broken, but not the palm tree. Though the wind may force it to bend almost to the breaking point, it rises back and flourishes with no visible sign of the trauma it’s been through because God made them to bend but not break, Just as He made us.
Life may bend us, the enemy may bend us, challenges and circumstances may bend us, but none can break us. If everything in life is pushing you to a breaking point, remember you’re built to last, overcome, triumph, conquer, and not break. If life pushes you to your knees, and Christ remains the centre of your life, be confident that you can withstand those pushes because your resilience is of God and not of man, like the palm tree.
As believers, we continue to grow in grace, and be fruitful to the end of life, continuously flourishing, and bearing fruit in old age because we can learn spiritual lessons from the palm tree phenomenon, to stand in faith, deeply rooted in the truth of God’s word while His presence nourishes us to bearing good fruit.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to learn and lean on your word to give my root dept that would keep me grounded even through the storms of life in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Shalom,
WOMEN OF LIGHT INT PRAYER MIN.

HEADCANON // OLD SUMERU, LOCATION & MORE
Well, when I say old Sumeru it’s more in terms of where Sylvie was located.
A lot of my research—as brought up in some other headcanons—is based off the Achaemenid Era of Persia ( Darius the 3rd and all that ) due to a lot of early terminology heard from Sumeru NPCs linking back to Zoroastrianism. Case in point, Dastur is the term for a high priestess in Zoroastrianism, Anahita, like the blessing offered by the fertilizer NPC in Inazuma, is one of the goddesses from the Avesta which is their religious text, while the ‘primary’ religion was Zoroastrianism back then.
Since I kinda dug my heels into this research pre-Sumeru release and leaks, I ain’t moving!!!
LOCATION
My personal headcanon is that the Varuna Contraption and Aranara didn’t come until after the Archon War concluded, so this area’s water levels were up to the whim of the natural weather. Most people were located on the higher mountainous plains, but some lived amidst the tall trees that made up Apam Woods, well above the natural water levels below. This makes it a hybrid of a rainforest and plains, bring it to be a subtropic climate ... the rainforest rarely goes below 20°C, meanwhile the plains can reach 10°C at nights.
Roughly the same ‘pathways’ existed even back then, though Devantaka Mountain did not have a giant dent in it at that time. Travel by sea and land was common, especially due to the bountiful amount of wood to be used for making boats. Due to its positioning as well, there was overlap with other Sumerian deities and those from Liyue as well ... some people even took the long travel to the Inazuman islands or to Mondstadt if they didn’t wish to travel by land, though the trip was long due to the distance.
TRADE & ECONOMY
Trade was an important part of the economy and was the main currency for them, though they never had their own made. Often it was a hodgepodge of other currencies from regions that made their own ( pre Mora ), otherwise value was present in the items that were traded for other items of equal perceived value.
Of course, this did mean nothing was truly set in stone for the value of items, but due to the ecosystem and environment, quite a number of useful things were produced from the region to be used as trading:
Wood in all forms, due to the variety of wood in the ecosystem and due to Sylvie’s influence
Plants that do not grow in other climates, especially herbs that are extremely potent and useful in helping human health or those often used in teas
Crops that do not grow in other climates, such as coconuts, coffee beans, cocoa beans, nuts, and fruits like mangoes / pineapple etc
Spices ( rosemary, cumin, chili peppers, etc )
Certain ‘common’ crops such as wheat, maize, rice
Wine to some degree
Importing more commonly leaned into livestock / meats, and dairy products as raising animals in this environment was a bit harder due to the geography. There were some areas that did have them, but the production of meat and food wasn’t as prominent and more relied on trading or hunting.
LANGUAGE
Sylvie’s mother tongue, and what was the primary ‘official’ language used back then, was Old Persian ( as I refer to it as Old Sumerian ). Little survives of the language today, so it’s hard to find too much outside of old scriptures.
Although they were originally written in stone, due to the abundance of wood and material to make paper, scriptures in old Sumeru were on paper, even if in the form of cuneiforms, though oral history was also heavily prevalent due to the non-lasting features of paper. Some scriptures have been written on stone, but it was very rare, and it is unknown if they have survived the aftermath of the war.
Some other languages were prominent due to trade being such a heavy reliance that some lingua francas were created to bridge the language gap between different locations, like Liyue. Those are very much lost to time now, perhaps only remaining in some shreds of history; one of them Sylvie does remember due to a few becoming a bit more prominent amidst their people, but Old Sumerian was still the primary language.
Adjusting to the modern language of Sumeru was a bit funky for them post-death / coma; although there are similarities to the old tongue, the scripture / alphabet is completely different and loan words have been brought in from other languages, as well as Sumeru now more than likely having more languages that are commonly spoken than they knew.
They have a preference for the modern script and tongue now ( which for me and the sake of writing Sylvie is modern persian / farsi ), but still can speak Old Sumerian fluently since it’s their first learned language, and the language they’ve known for thousands of years ... though there are next to no people they can use it with unless they existed in Old Sumeru and knew their specific version of the language, or learned it ( which is hard due to it being extinct ).

Using The Tools We Have To Get By
Being from a big city, I was not as fortunate as many people to be able to experience the natural world firsthand. Having grown up during the technological era, most of the knowledge I possess comes from watching an absurd amount of TikTok, YouTube shorts, and Instagram reels…
During COVID, I had an abundance of spare time on my hands, and I spent more time than I would like to admit on YouTube. Now, most of this time was spent watching brain-rotting twitch drama but I did also spend a good amount of time watching nature documentaries. As I said, more screen time than I would like to admit… Anyways, during this time I found a documentary titled, The Insane Biology of: The Octopus. Apart from some amazing biological feats, what was most fascinating about this piece, is just how intelligent octopuses can be. Although defining intelligence can be difficult (as I have painfully learned in my psychology class :p), the octopus displays various levels of intelligence; in planning, in memory, in playful activity, and in ecological intelligence (Sammann, 2020).
Most interestingly, octopuses have shown incredible feats of memory, both short-term and long-term; being able to recognize objects, areas, and even in some cases human being friends (). This in conjunction with the fact they are one of the few animals known to utilize composite tool use, they are seen to have superior survivability in the wild (Sammann, 2020). Transporting coconut shells and using them as shelter when they are tired; they display their incredible ability to plan and survive in nature (Sammann, 2020). Being completely separate from primates in the evolutionary tree, it begs the question… How have these wonderful creatures developed such an intense intelligent ability? Their secret?... They’ve had to. Octopuses are expected to be over 330 million years old, and over that time have faced significant challenges in the natural world (SMV, 2022). Originally, the ancestors of these squishy molluscs had shells, but around 160 million years ago they would come to lose their them (St. Fleur, 2017). With predation kicking up, being nimble and witty would serve more favourable in the eye of our mother nature (St. Fleur, 2017). As these conditions would require them to rely more on planning, strategy, and tool use to survive, they would learn to break out of their shell and live free. As to not ramble I’ll leave it here. However, if your curiosity consumes you, check out the end of this post for a link to the video.
Anyways, as I have experienced firsthand, sometimes it can be difficult to indulge in nature. However, that is no reason to neglect it. There are a ton of resources online and some interesting forms of content that pertain to wildlife, geology, and anything that really pertains to nature. If you are feeling a little lost in nature, I left a list of some good places where I got started that helped me get more into learning about nature. These resources are sure to help fuel and nurture anyone trying to salvage their passion.

Kamala Harris Is Not Your Brat
The intersection between pop-culture and politics could decide the fate of the 2024 American election
miro.medium.com
The summer of 2024, so far, has featured multiple events and ‘trends’ that have shaped the season into one to be remembered. In the realm of music, we have seen the rise of three new ‘it-girls’: Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Charli XCX. The last girl of this trio released her sixth studio album in early June, titled Brat. This electronic-club rave-hyperpop fusion has dominated both the dance/electronic music charts and the current meme and trend climate, especially on TikTok. In the realm of politics, Democratic candidate Joe Biden stepped down from the upcoming presidential election in November, nominating Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place, right after Republican candidate Donald Trump survived a bullet to his ear. These events, although from different spheres of culture, have intersected thanks to memes and the internet, causing (in my opinion) to be an important driving force of the outcome of the American elections–literally ‘pop-politics’.
Figure 1
Figure 2
Figure 3
Shown above is the product of said intersection. These edits combine the fun-loving party girl ‘aesthetic’ of Brat with Harris’s unserious demeanour (see: coconut trees) to create a Generation Z style support for Harris as the future president. It is no surprise that most young Americans support her wholeheartedly as opposed to the, quite frankly, ancient and ‘expired’ Biden. These memes are almost like a celebration of the premature ‘death’ of Biden, and the ‘birth’ of Harris–who will supposedly bring about a new era as the would-be first Black-Indian female president of the USA. However, the usage of Brat in her campaign should not equate to Harris being the ‘perfect’ candidate–as there is no such thing. It is simply a way for her to garner support–a simple marketing tactic.
This is not to say that Kamala Harris is not ‘Brat’ or ‘Brat-coded’, as the very creator of the album, Charli XCX, has given her recognition as Harris being ‘Brat’, allowing for the official X (Twitter) page of Harris’s team (Kamala Headquarters) to officially incorporate Brat in their campaign. This is to say that Harris’s endorsement of Brat (and vice versa) is fake. It is the cooler and less-’cringey’ version of Hillary Clinton’s “Pokémon Go to the polls” from 2016. This tactic, of older people jumping on current meme trends in order to stay ‘hip’ with the kids is nothing new. Harris simply got lucky and managed to land a ‘cool’ meme instead of being cringe.
It is not only political candidates using Brat to market themselves–fast-fashion companies are doing it as well. The video below by Youtuber Katie Robinson details how:
Figure 4
The way companies such as Shein and Zara (as detailed in the video) use Brat and lime-green is quite similar to how Kamala Harris is using it. In a capitalistic world, one must not forget that presences such as billion-dollar fast-fashion companies and political candidates are not our friends. They use whatever means necessary in order to succeed, and one of the more ‘ethical’ ways is to paint their visual imagery in Brat green. Even Charli’s tweet supposedly endorsing Kamala Harris as ‘Brat’ could be a marketing strategy as well, it could not reflect her political views. She too is a celebrity, and would certainly take the opportunity to bring even more attention to her recent release if all it took was a simple tweet connecting her music (pop) to current world events (politics).
This is what an era of pop-politics looks like. Where pop culture is used by politicians to garner votes, whether successful or not, and politics is used by pop culture to garner attention. Both the fashion industry and Kamala Harris water-down Brat as a piece of musical art to nothing but a trend that they can jump on, promptly throwing it away when it isn’t ‘cool’ anymore. Charli XCX is doing herself and her album a disservice by allowing it to be so heavily associated with Harris and unethical fashion companies. Kamala Harris is not ‘Brat’ because she truly is; She is ‘Brat’ because if she is, she can obtain your vote.

______________________________________________________________
Upon reaching the shore of the beach and meeting the ocean, I felt my small bare feet slowly and gently sink into the sand. The cold water refreshed my feet after walking a few meters on the hot sand. The sea at that point was serene, the waves gentle, much like a basin of water in the backyard on a warm Sunday. Today had been quite hot, but the sun that had punished us on the way here now rewarded us with a beautiful spectacle, very close to the end of the day. The water and everything the sun touched gained golden hues, and curls in hair became even more golden.
I found the old boat still tied to the coconut tree; the rope wasn't very long and allowed me to stay inside the boat without the danger of drifting away. Like an umbilical cord, it kept me safely connected to the beach that embraced me like a womb.
I entered the boat, which, though old, still floated well. I could lie down and settle inside it. The smell of salt mixed with seawater and the scent of fresh fish ingrained in the old wooden planks took me even further into my thoughts and memories. I remembered the youthful years when my grandfather taught me to fish right there. I cried, a mixture of sadness and joy, a good memory that the sea was returning to me.
I was brought back to reality by the smell of sunscreen; now it was necessary to slather my whole body with it to avoid developing a disease. I hated it; everything became too slippery, too elusive, as if I had no sense of touch. The heat made the sunscreen melt and drip into my eyes, causing them to burn. Not to mention the unbearable artificial orange scent—who on earth thought it would be a good idea to smell like oranges all day?
I got lost in these thoughts and memories, and I think I fell asleep. I woke up later; the sun was already gone. I heard my children shouting my name, and I saw the relief in their eyes when they spotted me inside the old boat. They helped me out of the boat as if I were a small child, but I allowed it. I liked feeling their love and care for me. We quickly headed to the rocky shore, where a delicious grilled fish awaited us.
